Bucharest Dialogues – Mutual Learning Workshop Integrating Futures Methodologies

The third workshop of the Bucharest Dialogues series took place on June 10 – 11, 2010. World-famous international foresight experts came together and discussed the integration of foresight methodologies.

“During a time characterized by ubiquitous social and economic uncertainty, futures studies become a discipline in itself internationally, and the design of an integrated scientific methodology – a major stake. This event, and the ones following as part of the Bucharest Dialogues not only do they make Romania visible to the foresight expert community but place us at the heart of this avant-garde scientific field,” declares Prof. Adrian Curaj, manager of the Romanian higher education strategic projects.

The event was chaired by Prof. George Cairns, RMIT University, Melbourne (Australia) and Ziauddin Sardar, editor of the Futures foresight magazine (UK) and included important figures such as Prof. Jim Dator, one of the foresight founders and Director of Hawaii Research Center for Futures Studies, Prof. Sam Cole, University at Buffalo, New York (USA), Prof. Ted Fuller, Business School at the University of Lincoln (UK), Dr. Wendy Schultz, Director of Infinite Futures: Foresight Research and Training (UK), Jordi Serra del Pino, the first Spanish foresight expert and others.

The integrated reports resulting from the discussions within each working group will lead to the publication of a special issue of Futures: The journal of policy, planning and futures studies.

Background Information

The Quality and Leadership for Romanian Higher Education project is one of the five strategic higher education projects conducted by CNCSIS, CNFIS and UEFISCSU and funded through the European Social Fund, the Sectoral Operational Program Human Resources Development.

The mission of UEFISCSU is to manage the financial resources necessary to support the development of higher education and university research. In order to do that, the organization is seeking to attract new sources of financing and to focus its activity on a high-performance management of funds for higher education and research in universities.

The general goal of the Quality and Leadership for Romanian Higher Education project is to develop, with the help of all relevant partners, a vision and a strategy for Romanian higher education (in 2025), which would constitute the basis for medium- and long-term policies and actions, thus contributing to the improvement of strategic, financial, human resources and learning resources management in universities, to the promotion of innovation, cooperation and partnerships among universities, the business environment and research centers to develop a Romanian knowledge society.
