Workshop on Cooperation in the Euro-Atlantic, Black Sea and the Caspian Sea Area: A Starting Point for Many Future Innovation Projects

Over 20 project proposals concerning cooperation in the Euro-Atlantic, Black Sea and Caspian Sea area were generated and debated during the "21st Century Higher Education, Leadership, Innovation and Human Capital Development – Euro-Atlantic, Black Sea and Caspian Sea Area Studies" workshop. The event took place in Bucharest, between July 8 and July 11, 2010 as part of the Quality and Leadership for Romanian Higher Education project organized by the Executive Agency for Higher Education and Research Funding.

 

Among the participants were rectors, deans, members of the Romanian Academy, students and educational policy experts from Italy, Romania, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Moldova, their common goal being to develop interdisciplinary joint projects in fields such as long life learning, e-learning 2.0, health & life science, ITC technology for primary care. Numerous partnerships and projects put forward during the workshop will be perfected and launched starting with 2011.

 

“The three-day workshop showed that the Euro-Atlantic, Black Sea and Caspian Sea area holds a great potential of and openness to cooperation among research and education institutions with a view to developing the innovation human capital. The actual partnerships resulting from this workshop will provide exceptional opportunities to young students and professionals by improving mobility and cooperation in the area,” declares Prof. Adrian Curaj, manager of the Romanian higher education strategic projects organized by the Executive Agency for Higher Education and Research Funding.

This is a moment I have been dreaming of for a long time. A country’s biggest asset is the ingenuity of its people, this is what needs to be cultivated and put to use. With these projects, our intention is to cultivate the ingenuity of Romanian young people,” declares Prof. Eliot Sorel, University of Washington, D.C., co-organizer of the event.

Background Information

The Quality and Leadership for Romanian Higher Education project is one of the five strategic higher education projects conducted by CNCSIS, CNFIS and UEFISCSU and funded through the European Social Fund, the Sectoral Operational Program Human Resources Development.

The mission of UEFISCSU is to manage the financial resources necessary to support the development of higher education and university research. In order to do that, the organization is seeking to attract new sources of financing and to focus its activity on a high-performance management of funds for higher education and research in universities.

The general goal of the Quality and Leadership for Romanian Higher Education project is to develop, with the help of all relevant partners, a vision and a strategy for Romanian higher education (in 2025), which would constitute the basis for medium- and long-term policies and actions, thus contributing to the improvement of strategic, financial, human resources and learning resources management in universities, to the promotion of innovation, cooperation and partnerships among universities, the business environment and research centers to develop a Romanian knowledge society.
